Can My Friend Pay His Cheque Into My Account?
Mr Vaclav Rytir asks

My friend recieved a UK cheque with his name on, however he doesn't have a bank account. Can he endorse it to my name and could I put it in my account?

Why UK Banks Will Not Accept Someone Else's Cheque

If your friend has a cheque made out to them and wants to pay it into your account, banks will typically refuse. This applies whether your friend is standing next to you at the branch, has written permission on the back of the cheque, or phones the bank to confirm the arrangement.

The reason comes down to how cheques are printed. Almost every cheque issued in the UK today carries what is known as an "account payee" marking. You will see this as two parallel lines with the words "account payee" or "a/c payee" printed between them. This marking creates a legal instruction that the cheque can only be paid into an account belonging to the person or business named on the front.

Branch staff will not override this in normal circumstances. Even with your friend present and showing ID, they will decline. This reflects the law rather than a policy choice made by individual banks, though some banks may have procedures to handle genuinely exceptional cases.

The Legal Background

The Cheques Act 1992 changed how crossed cheques work in the UK. Before this law came into effect, it was common to endorse a cheque by signing the back and handing it to someone else to pay in. People did this regularly, and banks accepted the practice.

The 1992 Act removed this flexibility for crossed account payee cheques. Under the Act, a bank that pays an account payee cheque into any account other than one belonging to the named payee loses its statutory protection. If the cheque later turns out to be stolen, forged or linked to fraud, the bank could be held liable for the full amount.

Banks prefer not to assume this risk. They will typically refuse the cheque rather than expose themselves to potential claims. This has been standard practice since the Act came into force, though banking policies do evolve and individual banks may handle specific situations differently.

Some older cheques or those from certain sources may not carry the account payee marking. These "open" cheques could in theory be endorsed and paid into another person's account. In practice, most banks still refuse them because of fraud concerns and their own internal policies. You should not assume any cheque can be transferred to someone else, regardless of whether it carries the account payee crossing.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

What Your Friend Can Do Instead

If your friend needs to give you the money from their cheque, they have a few straightforward options.

  • They can pay the cheque into their own account and wait for it to clear. While the Image Clearing System allows for faster processing, funds commonly take up to four weekdays from the day after the cheque is paid in before they are fully available. Once cleared, your friend can transfer the money to you by bank transfer or withdraw cash.
  • Some banks now offer mobile cheque deposit services, allowing customers to photograph a cheque through their banking app rather than visiting a branch. Your friend could deposit the cheque this way and then transfer the funds to you once cleared.
  • If they do not have a bank account, they may be able to cash the cheque at the bank it was drawn on. This depends on the issuing bank's policies and usually requires ID. They could then give you cash or pay it into your account.
  • Basic bank accounts are available to most UK residents and can be opened even with a limited credit history. These accounts allow cheque deposits and bank transfers. Your friend might consider opening one if they regularly receive cheques. Online and mobile only banks may handle cheque transactions differently, so it is worth checking their specific policies.

For any option involving a bank transfer to you, your friend will need your sort code and account number. Standard Faster Payments transfers between UK accounts are usually instant and free.

Special Circumstances

There are limited situations where a cheque might be paid into an account with a different name. Joint accounts may accept cheques made out to either account holder. Business accounts can usually accept cheques made out to the trading name associated with that account.

If someone has died and you are the executor of their estate, you may be able to pay cheques made out to the deceased into an executor's account. This requires documentation proving your role. The bank will guide you through their process.

Power of attorney arrangements may also allow some flexibility, though this varies by bank and depends on the specific terms of the arrangement. You would need to contact the bank directly to check what they permit.

In all these cases, the bank needs to see that you have a legitimate claim to receive the funds. Simply being a friend or relative of the payee is not enough.

If you are unsure about your specific situation, contact your bank before attempting to pay in a cheque made out to someone else. They can confirm their policy and advise on any documentation they might need.

The Next Step

@Harry Most UK banks will accept a cheque made out to a known alias if it can be linked to the account holder, but it isn't guaranteed and some banks are stricter than others. Safest bet is for Graham to pop into his branch, explain that Harry Thomas is his trading name, and ask them to note it on the account. Going forward, I'd get clients to make cheques payable to G. H. Thomas trading as Harry Thomas, which covers both bases nicely.
Harry 23/08/2026 at 10:54 am
my partner has a cheque made out to Harry Thomas which is the name by which he is known by friends and work mates. His bank account name is Graham Thomas. Will the bank accept cheques made out to Harry Thomas? He is self employed and his invoices are headed HARRY THOMAS and cheques are asked to be made out to G.H. Thomas. Will that be accepteable?
BankAccountAdvice Editor 16/07/2026 at 7:02 am
@Jo jo Yes, you can pay a cheque into your son's account on his behalf. Just take the cheque along with his account details to the bank, or use the bank's mobile app if he's happy to share his login (though most apps now let you deposit cheques by photo, so he could do it in seconds himself). Some banks also let you post cheques in freepost envelopes. Worth checking his bank's specific rules, as a few require the account holder to be present.

I paid in a cheque on behalf of my boyfriend at the Post Office to be paid into his Santander (Santander were closed otherwise I would have paid it directly to Santander) bank account. The cheque has not appeared in his bank account despite me taking it to the Post Office 2 weeks ago. The Post Office say they have sent all cheques off via Royal Mail and do so everyday. My boyfriend's bank say they haven't received it. Do you have any advice on what to do to trace the cheque and is it possible that someone could have intercepted the cheque and either cashed it or paid into their bank account?
Many thanks

My dad has received a cheque for my mums pension after she passed away. Unfortunately my dad doesn't have a bank account and no fixed abode so therefore no utility bill to open an account. The only account he has is a basic Post Office one and they said they will not accept the cheque totally nearly £9000. My dad is happy to pay the cheque into my my bank account. Is there a way he can do this even though it's been signed in his name. We will both be present when we go into the bank so would this be ok?

Hi there

I recently received a cheque from H&M revenue from when I worked in London from 2012-2013. I am an Australian citizen currently living in Canada but will be re-visiting England in the next few months. I don't have a bank account anymore there but my partner (English citizen) does.

Are we able to take that cheque into his bank and he can deposit it into his account with my consent?

I don't want to have to pay the fee to have it cashed or the currency exchange to CAD when we plan on using it for being in England

Thanks in advance

As we are a UK-based website, we can only give information which applies to UK banks. However, your father 'should' be able to pay the money into your account on your behalf as long as the 'made payable' name on the cheque is yours.

Your wife could either request/authorise the payer to change the name on the cheque. Or likewise, it takes five minutes to set up a bank account if she wished to pay it in herself.

BankAccountAdvice Editor 04/11/2015 at 1:40 pm
It is unlikely your bank would accept it. You can follow the advice in the article about alternative methods of cashing a cheque, or if she does not want to open a bank account, she could open a Post Office account and pay her cheque into that instead.

I can only suggest taking the advice in the article which shows alternative ways around trying to cash your cheque. Or you could open a bank account. If you can give proof of ID and address, the bank can open the account with your cheque.

BankAccountAdvice Editor 06/08/2015 at 10:06 am
@Tp - Your Question was:I recieved a cheque, but dont have a bank account can I sign it to my dad to put in to his account?"Our Answer is:As specified in the article, it a risk on the bank’s behalf to accept a crossed cheque into the bank account of someone other than the name printed on the front and as a general rule of thumb, they just do not accept them. However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a way. Over the last decade a number of agencies have set up shop on the high street that say they will exchange a cheque for cash. If your father's bank will not accept the cheque, then you may have to look at this latter suggestion as an alternative.

my brother had his wages put into my bank account and the bank took £300 out of it, is there anything I can do as it was my charge but my brothers money?
BankAccountAdvice Editor 08/05/2015 at 10:50 am
@Cj - You could approach the bank and ask directly. However, as specified in the article; it is a risk on the bank’s behalf to accept a crossed cheque into the bank account of someone other than the name printed on the front and as a general rule of thumb, they just do not accept them. However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a way. Over the last decade a number of agencies have set up shop on the high street that say they will exchange a cheque for cash. Originally this was marketed as a way of people getting instant cash from pay-day cheques without having the wait for the standard three days. Of course, these agencies accept the risk that the original cheque could be fraudulent and as a way of counter acting this they tend to charge a fee, typically a percentage of the cheque’s value. If you do want to use one of these agencies as an alternative, then you will no doubt be required to provide some form of identification and also, you should find one that is registered with the British Cheque Cashers Association (BCCA). I hope this helps.

Am getting a cheque sent to myself and my partner, we do not have a joint account, will we be able to pay it into our own separate accounts?

@zoepowell193 - I would contact your bank's customer services directly to see if there was any way around this. Or as specified in the article you could approach an agency that at a cost will exchange a cheque for cash.

My partner has been sent out a cheque but is in prison at the moment.. Would I be able to put this into my account if he signs the check and writes a letter??

@rozzie27 - you may have to take the advice of the article and approach an agency who might exchange a cheque for cash. However, they do tend to charge a fee, typically a percentage of the cheque’s value. I hope this helps.

Hi my friend has been sent a cheque but cant cash it as she has no bank account and cannot open one because she has no acceptable Id so she can't even go to one of the places that cash them because lack of id she has asked if I could put it in my bank account but not sure if I am allowed to so im asking if I could do this for her.

I know it's rare to not have a bank account or photographic ID but I lack both and will receive my wage via cheque (not my choice I've previously used a friends bank account to receive wages) Will I be able to sign the check over to him to put into his account?
JohnJ Editor 05/01/2015 at 10:51 am
@kayley - if the cheque is paid directly to him in his name then theoretically no. It is rare that people don't have bank accounts in this day and age and it would take him five minutes to open one, perhaps he could take this option.

my partner does not have a bank account and has received a cheque would i be able to put it into my account? he uses my account for his wages and all his direct debits come out of my account..

@Steve - can you not open a bank account? Even if you open it temporarily and close it down once you have cashed the money if you don't want it to remain open. There are many instant access accounts you can open online that are quick and painless to open. Alternatively, if you don't want to go to the high street banks a Post Office account might help. That way you can ensure the money goes directly to you.

I have claimed for PPI and received a cheque recently, I have no bank account and the cheque states account payee, what is the best way to cash this without opening an account?

More and more regulation seems very sad and retrograde. You would think that freedoms should get better, not worse.
In my younger days, I would probably simply have opened a new account in the name concerned, without any hassle. My own father had five different current accounts with two different banks, all in quite different names. No fraud involved; just privacy.
We are told that it is the government who have made these changes - but in truth they are done in favour of the clearing banks.
