BACs Transfers and Processing Explained

BACs Transfers and Processing Explained

What is a BACS Transfer?

BACS stands for Bankers Automated Clearing Services. It is the system UK banks and building societies use to move money between accounts electronically.

If you receive a salary or pension directly into your bank account, it may arrive via BACS. The same system handles many regular outgoings such as direct debits and standing orders, though Faster Payments and CHAPS are also widely used for bank transfers.

How BACS Came About

The system was set up in 1968, when most payments still relied on paper cheques and manual processing. Banks needed a more reliable way to handle the growing volume of transactions.

BACS is operated by Bacs Payment Schemes Limited under the oversight of Pay.UK. It now processes billions of transactions each year, covering everything from wages to household bills.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

How Long Do BACS Payments Take?

A standard BACS transfer takes three working days to complete. The payment is submitted on day one, processed on day two, and arrives on day three.

Weekends and bank holidays are not counted as working days, so payments made towards the end of the week may take longer to clear. Some organisations can arrange next day BACS payments, though this is less common. Faster Payments often clear on the same day for those who need quicker transfers.

Is BACS Secure?

BACS has a strong track record for reliability and security. For most routine payments, particularly regular salary and bill payments, it remains widely used. Domestic BACS transfers typically carry no fees.

Our family solicitor transferred a share of my Aunts estate via BACS to my account, it has been placed as pending and have been advised it is due to security checks, the banks protocol is 2-4hours to clear. Despite 4 phone calls and now 72 hours since the transfer was executed, I'm still no further forward as it shows 'pending' in my account. Can I recall the transaction?

Hi my company pay us via bacs and have asked for our time sheets in before 7.30am on Thursday morning. They are say we will recieve our wages on Saturday or saunday. Is this possible for bacs . I thought it was 3 working days so would recieve monday?
EllieScotty 25/11/2018 at 6:05 pm
Hi there, I put Dow a deposit for a wedding to Doubletree Hilton for £1200. It was accepted at £800 and then there was an error thinking my bank didn’t like so much being taken. So arranged a bank transfer for the remaining £400. We have asked to cancel it and they agreed to refund the money. The £800 was in our account within couple of days and the £400 is till not returned. This was September. They are saying that the bacs is a long process and being done from India? I was told if still not in my account by 10th December then to chase it but it’s been 2 months now. Does this seem right?

I was told by my life insurance company that a payment would be effective on the 23rd and in my account on 30th. Does this mean that the fund will be available in my bank to withdraw on the 30th?
BankAccountAdvice Editor 25/01/2018 at 11:53 am
It's unlikely your company will stop the payment, if you have worked for the money to date.
kev 24/01/2018 at 9:10 am
hi i get paid tomorrow by bacs i walked out last night can my company stop the payment but i do leave in 2 nightd time anyway

@Tina - insurance claims usually take longer to process, not through the bank necessarily, but throught the insurance system.
Tina 13/12/2017 at 9:54 am
After 8 weeks of chasing my pet insurance claim they have made a bacs payment last thursday and I am still waiting for it to go into my account. They said allow 14 days but I don't understand why when everything I read says such method takes 3 days, the last time i spoke to them i threatened them with the ombudsman and now i am wondering if this is another one of their games. What is this 14 days timeframe all about? please explain

I have submitted an AUDDIS file a number of times for the same parent and it has been rejected each time over the last year. The reason code on the report is M = Transaction Code/User Status incompatible. Could you please explain what this means?
Cornwall Editor 08/09/2017 at 3:45 pm
@BIILLIO - rinf the bank directly. They should be able to tell you whether there is a payment coming through.
BIILLIO 08/09/2017 at 11:13 am
A BACS payment was sent to my bank around midday on Wednesday. I have been told that BACS payments should clear on Day 3 of the process (Which I guess is today?) I have seen nothing in my account as yet. Can BACS payments clear at any time during the day ? Or is it a case of if the funds have not arrived by a certain time then it won't happen until the next day..Or in this case possibly Monday as it is Saturday tomorrow. If there is a chance the funds could still arrive today then I will check periodically, however if the ship has already sailed then i will save my effort and check again over weekend or Monday instead. Any accurate advice would be appreciated, many thanks.

charlielyons 16/08/2017 at 4:47 pm
So please explain to me in this day an age, when I can transfer cash immediately to another account using fast payment for free. Why does it take up to 5 days to transfer cash when the account holding institution insist on using bacs? Why can't they use the fast payment system? Could it be something to do with the missing 5 days of interest I lose during the bacs process?

@Legra - in my opinion BACS transfers are pretty quick. It might be the company who is transferring the money who is at fault.
Legra 29/06/2017 at 1:58 pm
Why in this day and age does a bacs payment take so long in the UK? I work at home and abroad and payments in North America for example, are immediate including, on cheques. Why then are our banking so behind the times unless of course, bacs holds on to the money to gain daily interests before dispersing to individual accounts.
BankAccountAdvice Editor 19/06/2017 at 9:55 am
You would have to contact your bank directly regarding this matter. However, I'm sure your wages will be in by now. If there is still some discrepancy, you would have to speak to your line manager at work.

A simple error number so small in bank card. Possibly I wrote down sort code with a 03---- ( should be 08---) on a form along with name address acc number. Friday didn't get paid. When I realised mistake on Monday. Employer said that's why you not been paid will have to get it retreaved bounced back., hours later he said I get paid it this Friday... how do I know he isn't making advantage to delay paying wage another week..

Dear Ed, You state that you have not received no payment.
This is a terribly elaborate way, using two double negatives of telling us that you HAVE been paid. Well done, jolly pleased to hear it. So what is your complaint then?

Hi I get paid every week on a Friday but I had to work 2weeks In hand so I don't get last week's pay I get the weeks before. Anyway the company I work for pays us by third party. I got paid yesterday on the 22nd December but am confused to why that is ? I thought it would of gone in today, but I don't even know if that is the right week I worked. Or do you have any idea if the money will go in after 12 today. I say this because I think yesterday's payment may have been for something else lol rrrrr I'm confused lol maybe I will get another payment after 12 unless I receive it Monday lol. I went and asked the boss an she told me I will get paid Friday and next Friday etc so I am confused. Lol much help with how the 2weeks pay an the third-party business works I'd be very great full thanks.

My husbands work usually pay his bonus in cash but this week they aasaid they had no cash. They bacs payment on wed 21st will this be in the bank on friday?
I know its 3 days but was thinking. Wed, thurs, friday to appear!
BankAccountAdvice Editor 21/12/2016 at 2:04 pm
There is no reason why it shouldn't go in on 29th (if that is your usual pay day) as it does not conflict with a bank holiday.

I get payed on the 29th dec of work will it just go in my bank normal this year

saz 15/12/2016 at 3:36 pm
I set up a company pension payment by bacs (through Natwest bankline) to reach the pension provider on or before the due date, I select 'date to arrive' option always. It works with all our suppliers and HMRC for payments to reach them by said date, however the pension provider somehow never receives it on the chosen date and it has taken up to 14 days before they say they have actually received it into their account. How can they be the only recipient that this happens to? I have taken them up on it that the problem is at their end since it never happens with wages, materials, credit card or HMRC payments. Any thoughts?
Tash 15/12/2016 at 11:13 am

I recieved my pay slip from my previous job there on thursday night through email, we usually get our pay on the friday but mine hadnt came through..checked the pay slip and it said process date 11/11/16 which was the friday but nothing all weekend and have checked bank this morning and still nothing, haven't contacted employers yet as left the job but it's nothing to do with that that's all fine and i have my p45 etc but is this normal should i wait this long for a BACs payment?
Jackflash 15/10/2016 at 12:32 pm
I have recently won a case with a financial company totalling just over £12,000. I opted for the BACs payment option as it would obviously be faster, my bank has the 2 hour high speed facility. The financial company are yet to deposit my money. They cannot give me a day saying, authorisation and other factors need to be put into place.
At this rate would a cheque be faster and as a financial company that deals with mortgages, car finance and loans, are they able to make the faster BACs payment?
This case was finalised by the Ombudsman. The company in question have a long track record and drag everything to the death.
SH 28/09/2016 at 11:01 pm

Hi, my wage should have gone in to my bank today but due to "a glitch" the agency I work for haven't been able to put it in. They have told me my wages will be in by 18:00 today (half an hour after they would have broken up for bank holiday and not be about to answer any calls from me should the money not go in). I was wondering if there is any way to check if a transfer is being processed or what sort of time would they have to transfer the money for it to be in my account for 18:00? Thanks.

BankAccountAdvice Editor 20/05/2016 at 12:42 pm
It depends whether the money is in your account and/or whether withdrawing it will make you overdrawn.
Emma 19/05/2016 at 7:12 pm
Hey my wage is due to go into my account midnight tonight but I need to withdraw some of that money now, is it true that you can do this after 5pm
BankAccountAdvice Editor 11/05/2016 at 2:46 pm
If you are working legally and have a contract then your employer cannot withold payment. However, if your salary is paid monthly, then you may have to wait until the end of the month to be paid. You should speak directly to your employer in order to find this out.
Abbz 11/05/2016 at 12:23 am
I have recently left my employment due not being paid that said they have sorted this issue you out friday just gone and I still have nothing in my account can they told my money because I have left or will I need to check tomorrow
BankAccountAdvice Editor 05/05/2016 at 11:26 am
It's worth discussing this matter directly with your bank as it may waive the charges if this is a rare occasion and the funds were in the same day. The bank does have autonomy to drop such fees if it chooses.
Phoenix 04/05/2016 at 3:00 pm

Rosie 23/03/2016 at 10:35 am
Hey can our employer see if our wages have been sent to the bank and also will our wages go in on time for the 29th
BankAccountAdvice Editor 16/02/2016 at 10:11 am
Wages are usually paid in arrears, not in advance. It means if you leave work, your employer will have paid you hours you have already worked. Therefore the money is rightfully yours.
BankAccountAdvice Editor 15/02/2016 at 2:38 pm
In the first instance, you should speak to your bank asap who will advise.

My wife sent an email to a client with bacs details for a £5000 payment.
Someone has somehow intercepted the email and put their own bank details in. The client says it has left their account. HELP! We can't talk to the recipient bank because they say they can only speak to a bank .
Any ideas what we can do?

tom 15/12/2015 at 3:36 pm
Can a BACS payment be recieved earlier than 3 working days?
Jodie 15/12/2015 at 1:06 pm
You say a bacs payment takes 3/5 days to clear, is a Saturday included as one of those days or would it be a
Day longer ?
BankAccountAdvice Editor 10/12/2015 at 2:10 pm
As it's Thursday I assume you'll know whether they have gone in or not now. If they haven't you will need to sort this out directly with the Halifax.
Jodie 10/12/2015 at 2:09 am
@jodie I means Barclays account not Halifax,it says on there website it takes 3 days for it to go in to my account
Jodie 10/12/2015 at 2:06 am
I am due to get a backs payment in to my Barclays account,I spoke to the cica who confirmed it had been processed on Monday and should have the funds in my account in Thursday but on Halifax website it says it takes 3 days for a baca payment they are still not there, could it go in anytime or does in go in over the midnight update process

I recently did an article for a newspaper. Which they said it will be paid by BACS. The problem I have is I don't have a bank account so I asked for it to be paid into my girlfriends account. The newspaper in question then sent me an email back saying they cant make a payment for me in her account. Why cant BACS Do this I've given all my details and my girlfriends details also. I cant open a bank account as don't hold any photo I.D No passport. Don't drive as I'm epileptic. Obviously I've spoke to them just now by phone call saying who I was and would they send it into her bank account. She's even spoke to the newspapers and also explained this. Is there any reason why BACS wont do this or any reason why the newspapers involved wont do this

I wish to buy a second hand car from a garage using BACS. I've done a HPI check & every thing is OK. How safe is my money if the car is faulty. Do I have the same protection as a debit card?
BankAccountAdvice Editor 31/07/2015 at 10:18 am
@Smiths gardening ser - yes, as specified in the article a BACS payment can take between three to five working days to clear, whether it is being paid into your account or out of your account. It can reach your account any time of the day until close of play. I hope it has reached your account by now.
Smiths gardening ser 30/07/2015 at 9:25 am
I have placed two invoices in for blueplanet as I done gardening and it was suppose to be payed today it's taken 2 months they said it's on a pay roll can it be payed anytime of the day??
BankAccountAdvice Editor 26/06/2015 at 10:12 am
@Harveldene - you can find out via the bank directly if you give its customer service helpline a call.
Harveldene 24/06/2015 at 6:04 am
Child benefit said they'd sent out a payment on Friday and I should have it Wednesday. It's not there, and I can only request a call back that can take up to 7 days. Anyway of finding out from the bank if this payments waiting to clear?
Andy Editor 09/06/2015 at 2:20 pm
@Wilson - your company shouldn't ask for your card number, unless it is for items such as staff purchases and it shouldn't take money out unless it is again for purchases. All wage payments etc would be done through your account number and sort code.
Wilson 08/06/2015 at 1:34 am
If a company has my card number can they take money from my account? Without needing the account number, or does it work by the account number instead?
dingabell 04/06/2015 at 9:44 am

BankAccountAdvice Editor 03/06/2015 at 10:18 am
@Mikeco73 - if it hasn't arrived already, you should contact your bank directly.
Mikeco73 31/05/2015 at 9:38 am
Hi
I was due a bacs payment on Friday but found out the company send the bacs payment that day
When will it appear in my account please
BankAccountAdvice Editor 28/05/2015 at 10:06 am
@si - I'm afraid you would have to speak with your employer regarding this, as while it may theoretically be possible, your employer may have an issue with it.
si 25/05/2015 at 10:17 am
Hi I'm overdrawn on my old bank and my wages will be going in on Wednesday. Could my work do a bacs transfer recall do my wages don't get to my old bank account I heard they can do this but at a cost to my employer is this true
BankAccountAdvice Editor 06/05/2015 at 11:06 am
@cos651 - You would really have to call your bank directly, but the HMRC are usually pretty prompt in paying.
cos651 06/05/2015 at 5:18 am
Is posible to check if a bacs payment has been isued to my bank account? I get a message from Hmrc on 30.04.15 that the payment has been isued and today i still don t have the money in my account. Is this normal? Thank you
BankAccountAdvice Editor 28/04/2015 at 10:49 am
@J - you would really need to contact your bank or speak to your employer to find out this information.
J 25/04/2015 at 11:57 am

BankAccountAdvice Editor 17/04/2015 at 12:19 pm
@Blue - yes, you can call the bank and ask whether it has gone into your account.
Blue 16/04/2015 at 6:51 pm
Can your bank tell if a payment like barclays payment is clearing into your account
Tasha Editor 02/04/2015 at 2:25 pm
@Lin - I hope you have received your money by now. You should see it when it clears and is available to spend. If you can't see it yet, then I should either speak to your HR, or the bank.
Lin 01/04/2015 at 7:23 am
if my wages were paid into my bank via bacs yesterday is it normal that the money is not showing in my bank at all?? Will it show when it clears or should I be able to see the money already without it being available to spend yet?
BankAccountAdvice Editor 02/04/2015 at 11:39 am
@Volcanoelle c - Generally speaking, BACS payments are usually straightforward, so there shouldn't be an issue here. However, not all accounts (for instance some saving accounts or deposit accounts) allow you to send a payment this way. In the first instance I would check with the bank and see if it is set of for a BACS payment on the account number and sort code you have given.
volcanoelle c 31/03/2015 at 1:39 pm
To add to my earlier comment. The council have blamed it on the fact that the money was been sent to a savings account.
volcanoelle c 31/03/2015 at 12:28 pm
A particular council stated they made a large BACS payment into my account earlier this year only it never made it to my account. They blamed the bank stating that my bank sent it back. When I checked with the bank all the details I had were correct and yet nothing had been paid in. The council supposedly tried again, and the same thing happened. I checked with the bank again who said either my account is blocked or the accounts dept are making an error. The bank checked and my account is not blocked. I asked the council to see a copy of the paperwork to prove that the money had been sent back they refused stating it appears on a bank statement with other private payments. I have given yet another account, this time a building society only to find 10 working days later, the payment is still not in the account and there is no record of it waitng to be cleared? So what conclusion should I come to here?
Will Editor 11/02/2015 at 2:16 pm
@h - you could approach HR dept directly and ask for an advance if you do not wish to wait until next month, or ask them if they can put it through sooner.
h 10/02/2015 at 2:12 pm
I am paid by bacs every 4 weeks.a mistake by the payroll department meant that I was only paid 10.5 hours overtime instead of 21 hours overtime.my employer has said that I will have to wait until the next month,s pay date to be paid the overtime they failed to pay.this seems unfair as the error was down to the payroll and not myself.

Hi no had no insurance at the time but travel company has agreed to refund but will only pay it back to original account which is now frozen.
Phil Editor 05/12/2014 at 2:22 pm
@budgie - did you take out insurance? If you did you might be able to claim yourself, if it has cancellation or curtailment cover.
budgie 05/12/2014 at 8:48 am
My friend passed away recently and we were due to go on holiday together, we have been offered a refund but the company say the can only refund it back to my friend's account which has been frozen. The payment was made by bacs.
BankAccountAdvice Editor 14/11/2014 at 12:29 pm
@Mark - it's always annoying when you have to wait for someone to officially come back with a statement that you told them as a fact in the beginning. You could always ask Friendslife to compensate you with loss of interest on the time between the award and receiving it. You might also want to look at the paperwork and see if there are any clauses for witholding payment, but frustrating, yes.
Mark 14/11/2014 at 6:34 am
I have an endowment with Friendslife which matured on 1/11/14 and they have still not paid out as they say the policy is still assigned to a mortgage with the prudential however I changed to a repayment mortgage years ago, they have waited until the middle of October before telling me this news. I am now in the process of getting a letter from prudential explaining that my endowment is not assigned to the mortgage in order that I receive my endowment, I think Friendslife have a cheek in waiting so late before giving this information to me, I think they deliberately withhold payment in order to gain more interest on the policies.

C'mon BACS, the year is 2014 not 1914! Ever heard of the "faster payments" system implemented between banks?

These delays are surley not required in this day and age???

A donation to the Santander bank account of a registered charity from Kent County Council was made and the sum of money , £2500 has never appeared in the charity's account. I have the reference number that relates to this transfer, but I would like advice on how to proceed to secure this donation. A committee member of the charity has approached the bank in question on this topic but at this moment we do not have a resolution.

So BACS have never misplaced a payment. My latest Talk Talk bill claims that they made a BACS transfer into my bank account on 14.6.12. As of today, 23.6.12 there is no sign of the money in my account.

So who's lying? Talk Talk or BACS?

HiSoemone is looking to buy a car from me and pay through a bacs payment. Is there anyway they can reclaim the money after it is showing in my bank account on-line?
Anto 17/02/2012 at 4:37 pm
Can a bacs payment, once in your account be stopped
Sabreman 12/04/2011 at 8:53 pm
I made a BACS transfer from an account in one UK bank to my current account in another UK bank. The money was for the cash purchase of a car arranged for Saturday and the transfer took place during Tuesday evening. I went into the receiving bank to give advance notice that the transfer would occur for a ignificant sum. The BACS went through during the early hours of Friday morning but when I went into my bank that morning to withdraw the cash, this was denied and I was told that they had to hold the money for 24 hours in case the sending bank clawed it back !! A row ensued because I had made arrangements to travel some distance to buy the car on the Saturday. My works pension is paid into my current account by BACS transfer and that is immediately accessible. So why was I denied my cash when it was agreed by all concerned that it was sitting in my account ?
